Refrigerator - 3/22/2000
- freezer compartment drain line freezes up. Part of the drain line runs through the back of the fridge (five inches or so) which is where I defrost it. Any suggestions as to how to eliminate the freeze up.
This is a common problem with this type of Amana Refrigerator. There is a service kit that can be obtained through a parts distributor (http://www.cashwell-appl-parts.com) which contains a Heat Transfer Strip, a new Styrofoam Divider Block and Adhesive Tape. You would need to order this by Model No., Serial No. and MFG. No. to get the proper block.
You will have to remove the complete center section that divides the fresh food and freezer compartments to install these pieces. (The reason for replacing the block is the one that there now is saturated with water.)
If you do not want to do the update kit, the only other way to fix it is to install an electric drain heater by the Part No. GH250, but you will have to wire this into your preexisting wiring. If you do not fill comfortable doing that, I recommend the Amman update kit.

Dryer - 4/13/2000
- We are having new construction on our home. Our new dryer will be placed in the new laundry room which we can vent our new dryer directly to an outside wall. Unfortunately the outside wall is also the front porch. Our contractor states this is tacky and would like to run it down through the floor and vent it out using a 30-35 foot piece of PVC and vent it out the back of the house. He states he can put a few joints in the PVC pipe so we could take it apart periodically and clean out the pipe. My question is will this long run to vent out the pipe decrease the efficiency of the dryer? Will it take longer to dry the clothes then just venting it directly out the front exterior wall? Thank you for you input.
Most dryers are designed to vent 30 - 35 feet, but you must take in to account that for every 90 degree elbow turn you will loose 5 feet of duct. If the dryer duct requires you to have 2 turns, that will automatically bring your distance down to 25 feet of a straight stretch. The longer the
stretch could cause your drying time to increase.
I would also recommend using 2 or 4 foot section of rigid aluminum duct instead of PVC because the plastic tends to collect lint quicker than the metal duct.

Dryer - 1/8/2000
- the heating element was burned into replaced it and now it takes 3 cycles to dry what should I check next. I have checked the continuity in all the thermostats and they all show to be closed... help....
From what you are describing the heating element is working, but it is taking several cycles to dry. My suggestion is first check the duct system to make sure it had not been crushed in anyway.
A easy way of checking this is to locate where the duct exits your house to make sure warm air is blowing out. If you are getting air, do not assume that the vent is not obstructed or crushed in some way. You need to look behind the dryer to see if its is crushed. Make the necessary adjustment if so.
If there is not obstruction behind the dryer, you will need to check the ducting system throughout the house for water or lint collection. You will need to clean any duct that has lint or water.
The other possibility could be the thermostat is not cycling property. Check the temperature inside the dry while the dryer is running. The dryer temperature should be between 130 -170 depending on the cycle.

Gas Stove
- how do I install a new oven valve control
Unfortunately, we don't work on gas appliance stated on our form. The only suggestion we have is to contact your local gas company, or appliance center that does service gas appliance.
You have to be very careful when working on gas, so you don't have any leaks. A way to test for gas leaks is a soap and water test. Place some soapy water on the area and if you see bubbles when the gas is on you have a leak.
